How to transfer video from DV Camcorder tape to PC?? I have Firewiere 1394 but still no device detection!?

I video taped my dance routine on our CANON ELURA 100 on a mini dv tape.
I put in that firewire plate in the back of my computer, connected it to the camera then tried to “Capture from Video Device” on Windows movie maker with no success! It says it couldn't locate a device. I have been trying for almost a year to figure out how to get my video onto the computer but still no luck! I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out,
