How to upload MiniDv camcorder to a Windows Vista Laptop?

Hiya.
I have a Sony Handycam MiniDv camcorder (DCR-HC24) and I am trying to link it to my laptop. I am doin it via USB as I have no idea what Firewire is (I did do a search but it just confused me).

My old laptop was an XP, I still have it seeing as the camcorder won't link, but I don't want to always rely on it. I have LOADS of mini dv tapes I would love to edit at some point.

I have downloaded Driver Robot, to no avail. I have managed to upload Picture Package, but that isn't any good without the camcorder…
