Transferring videos from Mini DV Camcorder to Computer?

I have a Panasonic NV-GS33 Mini DV Camcorder, it used to work fine with the old windows movie maker, just plug in and go.

Last year I purchased a Toshiba Satellite with the new movie maker 2 and now I can no longer transfer video to my computer.

The laptop has a S400 4 pin connection and the camera has a 4 pin connection which I assume is the same. So after reading that it would only work using firewire I ordered a 4pin to 4pin cable but it still does not work.

I am doing everything just like I used to with my old laptop, the camera is in play mode etc, the laptop makes a noise when the camera is attached but does not seem to register it in any programs!

Someone help me because it is driving me crazy!
