Jvc mini dv camcorder capture to macbook?

i have a jvc gr-d650u and want to transfer it to a macbook pro. awhile ago, i tried to plug it in through firewire, but it couldn't recognize the camcorder. is there a way for the macbook to recognize it? i really need to transfer the videos in there for a school project.
