How to transfer video from DV Camcorder tape to PC?? I have Firewiere 1394 but still no device detection!?

I video taped my dance routine on our CANON ELURA 100 on a mini dv tape.
I put in that firewire plate in the back of my computer, connected it to the camera then tried to “Capture from Video Device” on Windows movie maker with no success! It says it couldn't locate a device. I have been trying for almost a year to figure out how to get my video onto the computer but still no luck! I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out,

What are the pros and cons of HD Vs MiniDV?

I have had a Mini DV Sony camcorder that has developed some issue with the casette mechanism.
I am contemplating on whether I should go in for a MinDV or an HD video camera.
What are the pros and cons for each?
If I go for HD, how will I ever be able to view the DV tapes that I have recorded stuff with in the past?

How do i move files from my mini dv cameras sd card to my computer?

I have a jvc mini dv with a mini dv tape and an SD card. I want to transfer my video files to my computer but dont have a firewire port i think anyways so what do i need to move the files from the card?can i just plug the usb into my camera then transfer that way to my computer from the crd not from the tape?

Where's the best place to buy a camcorder?

I need to purchase a camcorder (preferably HD – with decent to good reviews) to start taking videos of my soon to be baby. However, I don't have $600 to spend… I'm looking at more like $400 MAXIMUM.

I haven't been able to find any good deals or sales anywhere – prices are just about the same everywhere… Does anybody know where I might be able to get a good deal, or find a good sale on a good camcorder? Any recommendations on a camcorder in my price range (HD with decent to good reviews as well) that you think I would be happy with? The baby won't be born until after Christmas – should I be waiting for a better deal to pop up around then?

I just don't have a lot of money to be throwing at this, especially with all of the expenses coming with the new baby… Thanks for your help!!!

Transferring videos from Mini DV Camcorder to Computer?

I have a Panasonic NV-GS33 Mini DV Camcorder, it used to work fine with the old windows movie maker, just plug in and go.

Last year I purchased a Toshiba Satellite with the new movie maker 2 and now I can no longer transfer video to my computer.

The laptop has a S400 4 pin connection and the camera has a 4 pin connection which I assume is the same. So after reading that it would only work using firewire I ordered a 4pin to 4pin cable but it still does not work.

I am doing everything just like I used to with my old laptop, the camera is in play mode etc, the laptop makes a noise when the camera is attached but does not seem to register it in any programs!

Someone help me because it is driving me crazy!

i have sony mini-dv camcorder. when i play the recorded video on tv from camcorder, the date & time are visible on tv-sceen. but, when i capture video to computer through firewire in avi format and play back, the date-time do not appear. camcorder settings are ok to record and trasfer date-time stamp.
